A Four Generation Family Portrait

This may have been the most touching family portrait sessions I have ever had the pleasure to photograph. Four generations came together for this family portrait that my daughter and I photographed at the client’s home in Erie. I am very proud to have been chosen to photograph this important moment in this family’s life.

These two are on either end of four generations and this was the first time they had ever met. What a great moment.

When it rains, it pours, but it’s all good!

In Colorado, when it rains, it pours, but luckily it doesn’t usually last long. The rain and hail was coming down in sheets just a half an hour before this session started. There was even a tornado watch! Like they say in Colorado: If you don’t like the weather, then just wait a minute. Bad weather usually leads to beautiful portraits, just as it did for this family, so don’t let a little wet weather scare you off.Erie Colorado family portrait after a storm Outdoor tween kid photosOutdoor portraits of teen girlsoutdoor photo of mom with her 3 girls

Meet Half Way | Family Photography in Golden Colorado

What do you do when one of your favorite clients moves a million miles away? You meet half way in Golden. Okay, it wasn’t a million miles, but it seems like it. With plenty of photographers in Castle Rock, I was pretty grateful that they would come all the way to Erie for their Family photography. Thank you, Nelson Family, and I know you’re going to cherish the Metal Wall Portraits of your awesome family for a long, long time.

Lots of people on the trail would stop to tell them how good they look. They were right, I mean just look at them.

The last fall family portrait session of the year.

The cold, the wind and the snow came the very next day after this shoot. This was the last outdoor family portrait session of the fall. It’s sad to see the leaves and the warm weather go. California - Tim Sutherland_0044California - Tim Sutherland_0040 California - Tim Sutherland_0041 California - Tim Sutherland_0042 California - Tim Sutherland_0043

Sisters (What I love About This Shot)

People (especially kids) often find themselves more relaxed as the photo session goes on. After ten or fifteen minutes we all get to know each other a little better, and they start getting used to the camera. These two, however, were ready to go from the very first click. In fact this photograph WAS the very first click!

The sisters are very close, but they couldn’t be anymore opposite in personalities. One of the sisters was kind of quiet and shy, yet acted very elegant during the shoot. The other was spunky, a little gritty and ready to take on the world. Can you tell which is which?

These girls made a big impact on me, as they were very well mannered, have strong family values and seem to really look  out for each other. And that is exactly what I love about this Shot. When I look at this image,  to me, it portrays all those qualities that are important in a family.

Denver engagement photo session with Elie and Michael

We started Elie and Michael’s engagement session near Union Station, then worked our way through the streets of Denver. Downtown Denver has such an architectural diversity that there truly is something for every taste.

Despite being the end of November, the weather was perfect. It was near 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Gotta love Colorado! It was a perfect evening for a walk downtown.

We are based out of  Erie, Colorado, and hold many of our portrait sessions in and around Boulder.  But, after this session,  I think I have a new favorite location. With all of this impressive architecture,  I can safely add downtown Denver to my list of awesome  portrait photography venues- especially for engagement sessions.

What to get Dad for his birthday…

I love being able to watch my clients’ children grow up in front of my camera. They go from wide-eyed toddlers to young people with their own ideas and passions for sports, music, and a host of other things. These two guys are a couple of my favorites to  photograph. They’re happy, and extremely outgoing, every time I see them – and they love their sports!

The first time I took sports portraits of them was about three years ago. It was a surprise gift for their dad.  Mom brought them to the studio with a car load of dad’s high school football equipment and his Letterman’s Jacket. The idea was to use their dad’s beloved sports gear as props with his kids. The guys had a blast, and the gift was a huge success.

Now, these two have a new baby sister. After the traditional family portraits were taken, my buddies pulled out their own jerseys! Their passion is hockey, with a little bit of football mixed in. I look forward to watching these two, and their sister, grow into true athletes. I also look forward to documenting some successful careers!
